螺旋输送机具有以下特点：
1）结构比较简单，成本较低。
2）工作可靠，维护管理简便。
3）尺寸紧凑，断面尺寸小，占地面积小。在港口的卸车卸船作业中易进出舱口、车厢。
4）能实现密封输送，有利于输送易飞扬的、炽热的及气味强烈的物料，可减小对环境的污染，改善港口工人的作业条件。
5）装载卸载方便。水平螺旋输送机可在其输送线路上的任一点装载卸载；对垂直螺旋输送机配置相对螺旋式取料装置可具有优良的取料性能。
6）能逆向输送，也可使一台输送机同时向两个方向输送物料，即集向中心或远离中心。
7）单位能耗较大。
8）物料在输送过程中易于研碎及磨损，螺旋叶片和料槽的磨损也较为严重。
螺旋输送机结构特征：
（1）螺旋输送机的螺旋叶片有实体螺旋面型、带式螺旋面型及叶片螺旋面型三种。实体螺旋面称为s制法，其螺旋节距GX型为叶片直径的0.8倍，LS型螺旋输送机适用于输送粉状和粒状物料。带式螺旋面又称D制法，其螺旋节距与螺旋叶片直径相同，适用于输送粉状及小块物料。叶片式螺旋面应用较少，主要用于输送粘度较大和可压缩性物料，在输送过程中，同时完成搅拌、混合等工序，其螺旋节距约为螺旋叶片直径的1.2倍。
（2）螺旋输送机的螺旋叶片有左旋与右旋两种旋向。
螺旋输送机的应用：
螺旋输送机广泛应用于粮食工业、建筑材料工业、化学工业、机械制造业、交通运输业等国民经济各部门中。螺旋输送机主要用于输送各种粉状、粒状、小块状物料，所输送的散粒物料有谷物、豆类、面粉等粮食产品，水泥、粘土、沙子等建筑材料，盐类、碱类、化肥等化学品，以及煤、焦炭、矿石等大宗散货。螺旋输送机不宜输送易变质的、粘性大的、块度大的及易结块的物料。除了输送散粒物料外，亦可利用螺旋输送机来运送各种成件物品。螺旋输送机在输送物料的同时可完成混合、搅拌、冷却等作业。在港口，螺旋输送机主要用于卸车、卸船作业以及仓库内散粒物料的水平和垂直输送。利用与物料直接接触的水平螺旋轴将物料逐层从车厢两侧卸下的螺旋卸车机在国内港口已有多年的成功使用经验。由水平螺旋输送机、垂直螺旋输送机以及相对螺旋取料装置组成的螺旋卸船机，已成为一种较为先进的连续卸船机型，日益广泛地应用于国内外散货专用码头。
